What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text record a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Browsers also offer local storage and session storage, which a page can read but which are never sent with a request. This policy lists all three where Cliux uses them, because "cookie" alone would leave things out.
On the Cliux site and console
The sign-in and sign-up pages and the console load Clerk, the sign-in service, which keeps __client_uat and one item of its own settings in local storage even before you sign in, so it can tell whether you are. The rest of the Cliux site does not load Clerk; its header only reads __client_uat, when Clerk has set it, to show "Dashboard" instead of "Sign in". Everything else is written only when you do something that needs it: answering the cookie notice keeps your answer as cliux.cookieChoice, a first message sent to the help chat without being signed in sets __Host-cliux_help, a chat handed to the support team keeps one item in local storage, and working in more than one workspace in the console sets __Host-cliux_workspace, so you sign in to the last one you opened. Signing in sets the other sign-in cookie below, opening a plan's payment form on the console's billing pages loads Stripe's payment script, which sets two cookies of its own, a password-protected preview link sets one more, and the editor and a few console tools keep the items below while you use them.
| Name | What it is and why | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|
| __session | A cookie set by Clerk. Keeps you signed in to the console. | Your session |
| __client_uat | A cookie set by Clerk. Set when you open the sign-in pages or the console, signed in or not: tells Clerk whether this browser is signed in and when that last changed, so every tab agrees. The rest of the site only reads it, to show Dashboard instead of Sign in. | 1 year |
| __clerk_environment | Local storage set by Clerk. Clerk's own settings for this site's sign-in, kept so the sign-in form loads without asking for them again. Nothing about you. | Until you clear the site's data |
| share_unlock_<link> | A cookie set by Cliux. Remembers that you entered the password of a shared preview link, so you are not asked on every page. | 1 hour |
| __Host-cliux_help | A cookie set by Cliux. Set by your first message in the help chat when you are not signed in, so the conversation follows you from page to page. Only the help chat reads it. | 14 days |
| __Host-cliux_workspace | A cookie set by Cliux. Set in the console only if you work in more than one workspace (your own sites, or an agency): it names the last one you opened, so signing in takes you back there. It is only a hint, checked against what you can open every time. | 180 days |
| cliux_ui_locale | A cookie set by Cliux. Remembers the language you chose for the console: set when you follow a sign-up or sign-in button from a page in another language, or change the language in the account menu. Once you are signed in, your account holds the choice and this only carries it to the sign-in screen. | 1 year |
| cliux.helpChat.withTeam | Local storage set by Cliux. Notes that this browser has a help chat with the support team open, so the chat button can show a reply that arrives while the chat is closed. Removed when the chat closes. | Until the chat closes |
| cliux.helpChat.greeted | Local storage set by Cliux. Written only when you open the help chat or close its greeting, so the greeting is not shown again during the same visit. It holds the time and nothing else. | 30 minutes after your last page view |
| cliux.admin.helpChat.available | Local storage set by Cliux. In Cliux's own staff console only: remembers whether a support person is taking help chats. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux.helpChat.muted | Local storage set by Cliux. Written only when you mute the help chat's sounds, so they stay off; removed when you turn them back on. | Until you turn the sounds back on |
| cliux.cookieChoice | Local storage set by Cliux. Your answer to the cookie notice, so it is not shown again: what you allowed, the version of this policy you answered and when. It is never sent to Cliux. | 12 months |
| __stripe_mid | A cookie set by Stripe. Set by Stripe's payment script on the console's billing pages, to tell a real payment from a fraudulent one. | 1 year |
| __stripe_sid | A cookie set by Stripe. Set by the same script for the same reason, for one visit to the billing pages. | 30 minutes |
| preview-author-name | Local storage set by Cliux. Written when you comment on a shared preview link, so the name you gave is filled in next time. | Until you clear the site's data |
| canvas-state-<page> | Local storage set by Cliux. A copy of the page you are editing, written by the editor as you work. Cliux does not read it back or send it anywhere; clearing the site's data removes it. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux.canvasBudget.v1 | Session storage set by Cliux. How large a canvas this device can draw, measured once by the editor so it is not measured again in the same tab. | The browser tab |
| cliux.editor-tab | Session storage set by Cliux. A random id for this editor tab, so a theme change you make here does not stop your own next save of the page as if someone else had changed it. | The browser tab |
| cliux:rst:sound:<restaurant> | Local storage set by Cliux. Written only when you turn on the kitchen board's order sound, so it stays on; removed when you turn it off. | Until you turn the sound off |
| cliux:chunk-reloaded-at | Session storage set by Cliux. Written only if a page fails to load after an update and reloads itself once, so that reload cannot repeat. | The browser tab |
Clerk may also set short-lived helpers whose names start with __clerk_ while a sign-in is in progress. We do not count page views on this site. For one visit in ten we also measure how fast the page loaded: its timings, its path, how it was opened (for example by a link, a reload or the back button) and the kind of device and connection, sent once, with no cookie, no identifier and nothing stored on your device. We ask before measuring: the notice puts Reject all beside Accept all, nothing is measured until you choose, and refusing is a real refusal, not a dismissed notice. You can change your answer at any time from Cookie settings in the footer.
Your settings
The first time you visit the Cliux site or console, a notice at the bottom of the page says what is stored. Cookie settings, in the footer of the Cliux site, on your profile in the console, and below, shows the same list and every choice there is to make. One choice exists: measuring how fast the marketing pages load, for one visit in ten. It is off until you allow it, the notice asks with Reject all beside Accept all, and nothing optional loads until you choose. Your answer is kept for 12 months, then asked again, and you can change it at any time.
On a site published with Cliux
Our own code on a published site stores something in your browser only for a feature of the page (a cart, a sign-in, a like, a welcome screen shown once per visit) or after you accept the site's consent banner; what the site's owner adds is described below. The site's own visit counting stores nothing in your browser: unless you have accepted the banner, our server tells a visit apart by a hash of your IP address and browser, made with the date and with a secret that is never written down and is replaced whenever the server restarts, so the hash is new every day. The hash is kept with the visit for the site owner's analytics and your IP address is not; once the secret has been replaced, the hash can no longer be linked to your IP address or to another day's visits. What a site may store:
| Name | What it is and why | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|
| cliux_chat | A cookie set by Cliux. Keeps your live-chat conversation open across the pages of a site that runs the chat app. | 30 days |
| cliux-consent | Local storage set by Cliux. Remembers your answer to a site's consent banner. The banner appears only on a site whose owner has added a third-party tracker. | 180 days |
| cliux_member | A cookie set by Cliux. Keeps you signed in to the members area of a site that has one. Set when you sign in, removed when you sign out. | 14 days |
| cliux_blog_v | A cookie set by Cliux. Set when you like a blog post, so a like counts once. It holds a random id and nothing about you. | 1 year |
| cliux:sto:cart:<store> | Local storage set by Cliux. Your shopping cart on a site with a store, so it is still there on the next page. | Until you check out or clear it |
| cliux:sto:req:<store> | Local storage set by Cliux. One id for a checkout you started, so pressing Pay twice places one order. | Until the order is placed |
| cliux:rst:cart:<restaurant> | Local storage set by Cliux. Your food order on a restaurant's site, before you send it. | Until you order or clear it |
| cliux:rst:order:<restaurant> | Local storage set by Cliux. Lets you follow the order you sent to a restaurant. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux-language-suggestion-dismissed | Local storage set by Cliux. Remembers that you closed the offer to read a page in your own language. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux_welcome_shown | Session storage set by Cliux. Shows a site's welcome screen once per visit rather than on every page. | The browser tab |
| cliux_uid | Local storage set by Cliux. Only after you accept a site's consent banner, and only if the site's own code names you: the id it gave you, kept for its analytics. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux_traits | Local storage set by Cliux. Only after you accept a site's consent banner, and only if the site's own code adds them: the details it chose to keep with that id. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux_vid | Local storage set by Cliux. Only after you accept a site's consent banner: a random visitor id for the site owner's first-party analytics. It is sent with each visit to Cliux, which keeps the analytics for that site owner, and it does not follow you to other sites. Without your consent nothing is stored in your browser, and a visit is counted by a hash that changes every day; the hash is kept with the visit and your IP address is not. | Until you clear the site's data |
| cliux_session | Session storage set by Cliux. Only after you accept a site's consent banner: groups one visit's page views for the same analytics. | The browser tab |
| __stripe_mid | A cookie set by Stripe. Set by Stripe's payment script, which loads on a site that takes payments (a store, a restaurant, bookings, tickets, donations, paid plans or a payment button) when you start paying, or as soon as you open a page with a checkout form placed on it, to tell a real payment from a fraudulent one. | 1 year |
| __stripe_sid | A cookie set by Stripe. Set by the same script for the same reason, for one visit. | 30 minutes |
| cliux:chunk-reloaded-at | Session storage set by Cliux. Written only if a page fails to load after an update and reloads itself once, so that reload cannot repeat. | The browser tab |
If the site's owner has added a Google Analytics or Meta Pixel id, those services set their own cookies. While the site's consent banner is on, they load only after you accept it; declining is a real refusal and the answer is kept in the item above. The banner is on for every site to begin with, but its owner can switch it off in the site's settings, and then those services load, and set their cookies, without asking you. What a site owner collects through their own forms and store is described in that site's notice, not here.
A video (YouTube or Vimeo), a map (Google Maps) or a music player (Spotify, SoundCloud or Apple Music) on a published page is not loaded with the page. It shows a box saying whose content it is, and loads only when you press its button; from then on that company receives your visit under its own policy. A site's fonts are served by the site itself, so loading them does not contact Google.
Third parties
Clerk sets the sign-in cookies named above under its own policy, and its sign-in service runs behind Cloudflare, which sets short-lived bot-protection cookies (such as __cf_bm) on Clerk's own address, not on ours. Stripe's payment script, which loads when you open a plan's payment form on the console's billing pages, sets the two Stripe cookies named above to prevent fraud; that form is Stripe's, shown inside the billing page. Some other payments in the console open Stripe's own checkout page instead, which runs under Stripe's policy. No advertising network and no cross-site tracker is loaded by the platform. On a published page, the videos, maps and music players described above load only when you ask for them; anything else the site's owner places on a page from another company's address, such as an embedded website, a pasted code snippet, or a photo or video file hosted elsewhere, loads with the page, and that company receives your visit under its own policy.
Managing cookies
Your browser can block, delete or warn about cookies and site data. Blocking the sign-in cookies means you cannot stay signed in to the console; blocking the chat cookie means a live-chat conversation does not follow you between pages; blocking __Host-cliux_help means the help chat forgets your conversation when you move to another page; blocking the site's storage means the cookie notice returns on every visit, because your answer to it cannot be kept. Nothing else on this list is needed for a page to work.
